The free overview

Lisbon rewards the person who gets up before the tour groups and gives up on getting anywhere quickly. The city is seven hills and a river, and most of what is worth seeing is a steep ten-minute walk from where the tram drops you.

I spent six mornings at the same stop in Graça, with the same coffee, and slowly realised I did not want to arrive anywhere. That is the pace this guide is written for. Two and a half days in the city, walked neighbourhood by neighbourhood, then south on the regional train to the Alentejo coast, where the beaches are long, the villages are white and the Atlantic is cold enough to keep them quiet in June.

What the guide covers

The PDF walks you through Alfama, Graça, Mouraria and Príncipe Real on foot, with a map for each morning. It prices every room I stayed in or looked at, lists the tascas where lunch is still under £12, and explains the Viva Viagem card so you do not buy three of them.

On the coast it follows two sections of the Fishermen’s Trail with bus times back to base, so you can walk one way without carrying a pack.

When to go

March to June and September to October. July and August are hot in the city and fully booked on the coast; the guide lists the two villages that stay reasonable even then.

“Took the 07:40 to the coast on your say-so and sat on the left. Worth the early alarm for that one bend where the sea appears.”
— Hannah R.
