The free overview

Kyoto has two cities in it. One runs from about nine in the morning to five in the afternoon and is crowded, patient and photographed. The other runs from first light until the tour buses arrive, and again after they leave, and it is quiet enough to hear gravel under your shoes.

This guide is built around the second city. Each of the five days starts early, rests through the middle of the day and finishes late, so you are in Higashiyama, Arashiyama and the northern temples when they are close to empty.

What is inside

Morning routes for five districts, with opening times checked in spring 2026. A lunch list of counters and noodle shops where you can eat well for under £10. A day trip by train and bus to the tea villages of Wazuka, which most visitors never hear about. And a short list of machiya townhouse stays with fewer than six rooms, most of them cheaper than the chain hotels by the station.

Getting around

A rechargeable IC card covers buses, subways and the JR lines. The guide explains which bus routes to avoid at peak times and where walking is simply faster.

When to go

March to May and October to November. The famous weeks, cherry blossom and peak maple, are the busiest of the year; the guide suggests the fortnight either side.

“Fushimi at six in the morning with nobody on the steps. I did not know Kyoto could be that quiet. The lunch list was the other highlight.”
